Today’s feature is:

Charisa Dowe

What do you do & how well do you do it?

I’m a full-time professional musician, by way of violin, viola, and voice. I’m classically trained, but these days I specialize in jazz and funk. (laughing) And I hope I do this thing well . . . it’s how I make my living! Besides, Carlene, you’d know – we perform together! ๐Ÿ˜‰ No seriously, I reached a point this year where I really started to get excited – people started to call me not just cause they wanted a violinist to fill the spot. They called me because they wanted ME, as an artist, to do MY thing that only I can do. And that’s a critical point. You can’t outsource, replicate, lay-off, or replace yourself. I’m beginning to see how this thing is really gonna go.

2)Where do you foresee yourself 12months from today?

Can I say on a beautiful beach in the Maldives with an umbrella-d drink in my hand curled up with my new hubby (laughing) but if I really have to nix that, I’ll say on the road with my band doin the thing. The album’s due up in a couple months.

3)What was one of the most memorable times in your life?

I remember the first time I stood onstage to try to do what I do now. I had never taken a solo before in front of an audience. In classical music, it’s all about control. In funk and soul, it’s all about letting go. I think I retched about three times backstage, and my musical mama (Ms. Lesa Terry from the all black Uptown jazz string quartet founded by the legendary drummer Max Roach) took my shoulders and said, “Girl – we need you out there. You can do this.” And I marched onstage with the band, and let loose with my violin and voice to the old blues tune of Stormy Monday which I still sing today. And I remember the FEELING. I remember having this startling moment of clarity on the stage, like, “Whoa – what was that?” And I believe, that when you are blessed enough to do what it is you are truly meant to do in this world, something in the universe just shifts and you feel this Knowing – that you are doing exactly what God intended you to do. And that was it. I was hooked. Forget the classical degree I had to finish, and the plans I had made to take the classical orchestra world by storm and be just another face in the machine – that was IT. The rest, as they say, is history. If you’d told me I’d be doing this today for my living 7 years ago, I would’ve hit you over the head with my violin bow!

4) Given the resources, what one change would you make in the world & why?

I would make sure all our kids got the education they deserve. Why did our ancestors fight so hard for us to get the opportunity to have equal schooling, and the same books? Because if anybody knew the power of knowledge, it was a slave whom knowledge was kept from. I run two urban strings programs every week in the city. Our kids our stuck, between their crazy parental circumstances, burned out teachers, and a system that fails them. We’re not educating them about finances, communication, life skills, in the name of more testing that quizzes them on info they won’t retain past a month. It’s just plain wrong. And any community in the world can attest to the power (and demise) of not educating its children properly.

5)What do you think of my daily blog? (Message for my readers)

Love it! – always good to hear the truth from real artists making it one day at a time. . . ย And you always make me laugh (you crazy Brit)!

Shameless plug: become my friend on myspace or facebook, and you’re sure to hear of my shows. First album ‘Soul Stories’ to released winter 2010.
